 This past winter I had the privilege of catfishing in the cold with Brian Cope, Sumter, South Carolina Field Reporter.

About a month ago I asked Santee fishing guide Capt. Bill Saltzman for a fishing report. At the time, he said catfish of all sizes were biting good, but that the big catfish bite would really heat up once the water got below 60 degrees. He invited me to come along within the next few weeks, and I took him up on his offer this past Friday.

The temperature was right, Capt. Bill said, for catching 40-lb class blue cats. He told me to be prepared to do battle with a big one, and he was right on the money, as a 40-pounder took a small chunk of cut shad as we drifted near Navy Point on Lake Moultrie in 52-feet of water.

We didn't catch huge numbers of fish, but what we did catch were quality blues with several 20+ pound fish to go along with the 40-pounder, with a couple of smaller fish mixed in.

It was a cold and brutal day, but Capt. Bill's pontoon boat is thankfully equipped with a curtain system that can get you out of the wind in between readying the rods and setting the hook.
